Living in America’s most lucrative city, New York is indeed a burden for those who are trying to find affordable dentists to fix their teeth. Many dental practitioners flock to New York for higher income opportunities while a lot of New Yorkers opt to take the subway to New Jersey to find a cheaper dentist there. But insofar as the quality of dentistry is concerned, New York is known for its array of seasoned dentists and dental health practitioners. The cost of getting a dental procedure done in New York may bear a gaping hole in the pocket, but with all the hype New York dentists are living up to, you know its going to be an effective procedure.

Cheap dentists in New York are hard to find, but with the help of the Internet, you may just land on a dental clinic that charges far less than its competitors. The best deals are on the internet, since the competition is very dense there, and dentists are also applying some marketing tactics of their own to secure recurring patrons in the guise of New Yorkers. Cheap dentistry fees are mostly offered on the website or on a directory listing of Dentists. E-discounts, as some may call them, can save you up to 50% off on a dental procedure if you know what dentist offers this coupon.

The benefits of finding cheap New York dentists on the internet are remarkably lengthy. First of all, you just don’t find cheap dentists – you hear other people’s testimonials about that dentist’s skills and rates. Probably the most information you can find is on Google Maps, where almost every dental clinic on the face of New York City is listed.

Cheap dentists often share similar traits regarding handling their dentistry business. You should consider getting a fee quotation from dentists who:

1. Have no website

2. Do not employ heavy promotion for their services

3. Run a sole proprietorship dentistry clinic or is a family business

Now if you’re wondering why you should consider low-profile dentists, it may be because they’re more focused on skill-building than marketing. But then again, there are some dentists who live up to their reputation of being “the best dentist in New York” or “the most famous cosmetic dentist in New York”. Either way, you should always start from the bottom of the ladder and work your way up until you’ve found a reputable dentist that can charge a modest amount for his/her services.

Cheap dentists, affordable dentists – they’re basically all the same. What matters is that they get the job done right and your savings don’t suffer the repercussions of dental financing. And, before anything else, always, and we mean “always” take a second opinion before barging into a clinic of a dentist you barely know, especially in New York.

Living in the metropolis and practicing dentistry at the center of it all, New York City, New York, is one of the most conducive career destinations any dentist around the world would dream about. It’s where both the artistic talents of dentists and their experience in handling the most demanding patients take center stage. Having been a dentist in the bustling city is a life accomplishment – you get to serve the most affluent families, be exposed to the latest trends and innovations in dental technology, and optionally be a member of the New York State Dental Association, which represents more than 13,000 dentists in the State of New York.

Other popular dental meetings and congregations held annually or that have been hosted by the state include:

1. The Annual Greater New York Dental Meeting for Better Dentistry (GNYDM)

2. Nobel Biocare Global Symposium

3. The American Society for Dental Aesthetics Annual Meeting

International seminars are frequently hosted in fancy New York City hotels and convention centers, apparently making it a cornerstone of international dentistry meetings. Some well-known establishments that have hosted dental seminars include:

1. Jacob K. Javits Convention Center

2. Waldorf Astoria Hotel New York

3. Radisson Martinique

Apparently, New York City dentistry practitioners make a sound living from their services either by setting up a clinic of their own (which is quite costly if you’re a new practitioner) or by joining dental associates. One of the richest streets in the world, Fifth Avenue and Upper East Side, are also home to the most prestigious dental clinics. The dentist population in Manhattan is also very lively. And to show just how publicity-wise New York City dentists are, try looking at their dental websites and see how flamboyant the design is, not to mention them grasping every opportunity to be featured on magazines and broadsheets.

And dentists are not that efficient without their trusted dental assistants, right? The dental assisting profession is one of the better and well-paying career choices in New York. Dental assistants get to handle to advanced dental equipment and facilitate the most respected patients. The New York Dental Assistants Association (NYDAA) also hosts in annual session within the state and advises non-members to become involved in the cause. They offer guidelines, seminars, and more importantly, a network of dental assistants who share the same passion as each member to promote the highest technical and ethical degrees of dental assisting.

But beyond the money-oriented silhouette of the city, there are still some generous dentists and organizations who allot their free time to serve the city’s impoverished and blue collar citizens. Community clinics and dental missions in public schools have spurred the interest of neighboring and outlying dentists in the metro to consolidate their efforts and free time to making city smiles better – all out of goodwill.

Dental insurance coverage is important and essential for any individual, especially in times when we least need to be covered in debt. Dental insurance – as opposed to popular belief that it only covers teeth accidents – is actually “all-in” when it comes to covering almost every known dental procedure, even preventative roundups.

Full coverage dental insurance can be quite tricky to find, especially nowadays when more and more insurance providers are leaning on hiding coverage options for major or expensive dental treatments and procedures.

Preventive coverage – by the word itself, this coverage insures coverage of dental expenses for:

Oral diagnostic examinations

Full/partial oral x-ray examinations

Teeth cleanings

Fluoride treatments

Composite fillings

Dental sealants

Do be advised that there is a yearly limit to the number of visits for a particular preventive treatment/examination your coverage will insure. Unless otherwise stipulated in the contract, the patient is insured only for a maximum of two dental examinations per year. Any subsequent (or third) visit for the same checkup procedure and the patient will have to pay out of his pocket.

Restorative coverage – fully or partially (50-80%) insures the patient on any major dental procedure, including:

Dental crowns

Fixed partial dentures (bridges)

Full dentures

Dental extractions

Dental implants

Root canal therapy

Gum treatments

In 2010, only half of the US populations have signed up/renewed their dental insurance, primarily because of layoffs and the cumulative effects of the trending disinterest of Americans to renew a good number of their yearly subscriptions to cut back on costs.

And who can blame the frustrated people who did not renew their contracts – a lot of insurance providers aren’t giving subscribers their premium’s worth. Even if the yearly benefits can accumulate to $1,500 per person, limited coverage and not to mention high monthly costs cannot pacify the qualms of irritated subscribers.

But like it or not, dental insurance is a godsend for those who need it – and the competition between insurers is healthy for people aching for amenable coverage rates. Affordable dental plans and discounted dental insurance packages are also available for college students and breadwinners with dependents. Additionally, the disabled, war veterans, and other eligible citizens should avail of Medicaid – a known health program initiated by the United States in 1965 via the Social Security Act.

For business owners – more likely those hit by the recession – who want to cut down on expenditures but don’t feel comfortable risking their employees’ benefits, self-funded dental insurance plans allow employers and employees to come into a mutual agreement of choosing the latter’s preferred insurer. Individual employees are entitled to choose the dentist of their choice. This can save the company thousands of dollars from being tied to only one insurer, with not even half of the employee population even going to the insurer’s network of dentists.

You may not know it, but your dentist’s plaques hanging on the wall and his luxurious foyer won’t make up for bad practice. You’re paying good money to get the services you need. And in the United States, a dentist’s job is a luxury. Before you get ripped off for your hard-earned money, give this article a look:

1. Dentists who delegate almost everything to their assistants.

Sure, assistants are there to help out, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they’ll have to create dentures, adjust braces, and perform other surgical duties a dentist is supposed to do. Even at a dentist’s plea and request, a dental assistant should never administer procedures on you.

Even if the procedure went correctly at the hands of the assistant, you can still sue your dentist for letting his assistant do the work; if the assistant is the one solely working on your dentures/braces, you can sue your dentist as well or seek help from dental ethics committees.

2. Dentists who take phone calls / talk to other patients during a surgical procedure on you.

A dentist should be focused, period. A procedure (or even a diagnosis/prognosis) can go sideways if the one who’s administering it can’t even empathize with the pain of the patient.

We’ve seen a lot of cases wherein a poorly installed composite filling had caused subsequent aching. Asking the patient, they unanimously said that during their operation, their dentist was also attending to an “important matter” or “had a lot of patients lined up.”

Bottom line: If a dentist can’t focus on you, how will he even be able to focus on solving your dental malady?

An advice to the patient: Before holding onto an appointment schedule, make sure you’re an early bird in line. Dentists tend to wane off their skills during brunches and late afternoons.

3. Suggesting expensive operations for diminutive tooth problems.

There are many dentists who suggest root canals for a tooth that only needs a filling. These dentists will slam and preempt your questions with their sophism and technical talk. They often times would suggest expensive, unneeded X-ray diagnoses because they’ve partnered up with a radiographer, and they get hefty commissions for every patient they send in.

Unless you have a serious problem, such as a gum disease or periodontitis, try to seek the advice of other dentists. Many dentists offer free checks on prospective clients. Also, look out for newly-practicing dentists, as they are sometimes unintentionally become giddy about suggesting procedures that have nothing to do with the present condition of your teeth.

4. Manhandling you for not resting still on the dental chair.

Dentists should have delicate hands, and should always assure the patient of the potential irks and jolts that might result from the operation/procedure. A few dentists get rough with their patients when they extract teeth, drill cavities, adjust braces, and even during scaling and cleaning sessions, resulting in either unnecessary pain and bleeding of the gums/lips. If you’ve been under the same “care” from your dentist over the past decade, it may be time you visited another dentist who can get the job done without impaling you to cringe with his hands and instruments.

We know – squeezing that cleaning gel over the bristles on your toothbrush isn’t enough to convince you about the so-called “cleaning powers” of toothpaste. And it’s good to be inquisitive towards the stuff you normally use.

You’ll be surprised to know what makes up toothpaste and what makes it so effective that you’ll brush your teeth longer than ever after reading this article.

First and foremost, the obviously advertised active ingredient of toothpaste is fluoride – sodium fluoride to be exact. This effective ingredient makes up only .25 to .30% of the entire gel. Sodium fluoride is an inorganic, colorless compound enhances our teeth’s defense against tartar by increasing the production and formation of fluorapatite, which is also found on tooth enamel (the outmost layer of our teeth). The logic of this is that fluoride is more of prevention than it is a solution.

Fluorapatite reinforces the strength of our tooth against plaque and cavity, and also giving them the superior white luster. And since enamel is white in natural form, the thicker it gets, the whiter our teeth become. People who complain about yellow teeth, but work tirelessly on their oral hygiene usually have a thin layer of enamel, making it translucent to display the second layer of the teeth, which is a yellow calcareous material called “dentin”.

A questionable organic compound that’s purporting to be helpful in ridding our teeth of bacteria and more importantly, gingivitis – is triclosan. Apart from fluoride, triclosan is also heavily advertised as a key ingredient on a lot of toothpaste brands with the slogan, “Proven to kill 99.99% of germs.” However, Triclosan’s antibacterial properties are being questioned by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Be warned though, that triclosan – when mixed with the chlorine contents of tap water – will produce chloroform inside your mouth. Another thing to discuss is that triclosan has no proven effects in its presence in other cleaning agents: antibacterial soap, deodorants, and dishwashing products – is something to think about, really. No matter how toothpaste chemists advise us not to worry about the “diminutive” effects of triclosan, we still don’t want a solvent/anesthetic in our mouths, do we?

Hydrated silica is the gelatinous substance that you should owe the spotlessness of your teeth to. This substance works by polishing and scrubbing our teeth to a point where every cluster of bacteria is disintegrated. Unlike triclosan, hydrated silica has no adverse effects on the body even if it’s mixed with other compounds. It’s also responsible for the white color and odorlessness of toothpaste.

But what good is fluoride and hydrated silica without sorbitol. Yes, sorbitol. This sugar alcohol is the one responsible for the:

1.) Enjoyable taste of toothpaste

2.) Integrity of the ingredients of toothpaste

3.) The transparency of some toothpastes

4.) And more importantly, the fixed moisture of toothpaste under almost any temperature and humidity.

So there you have it, the key ingredients of toothpaste at a glance. I know what you’re thinking: toothpaste isn’t so boring after all!

You’ve always been given a broad choice of foods to eat and snacks to avoid by your dentist, but doesn’t it count to know what vitamins healthy foods are comprised of? Before you munch on your tossed salad or sip your fruit juice, let’s take a quick peek on what makes food healthy for the teeth.

Vitamin A – vitamin A helps in the proper development of teeth and skin. Vitamin A’s antioxidant properties fight free radicals, which are responsible for tooth decay.

Foods rich in vitamin A include:

Liver-based products

Eggs

Butter and margarine

Vegetables rich in carotene, such as: carrots, leafy vegetables, potatoes, and mangoes

You’ll never run out of vitamin A-rich foods. They’re basically everywhere, and even preserved foods. Dependency on vitamin A rich foods will also pave the way to an overall healthy and glowing body, as evidenced by softer skin and better vision.

Vitamin C – apart from regulating our blood flow, vitamin C helps the teeth by:

1. Strengthens our immune system; when both the immune system and teeth are actively complementing each other, nothing can get in the way of a healthy organs and teeth.

2. Aids in the maintenance of strong, healthy gums.

3. Effectively prevents periodontitis for adults.

Foods rich in vitamin C include:

1. Citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons, strawberries, raspberries, and mangoes.

2. Fresh vegetables, which include potatoes, peppers, brussel sprouts, broccoli, tomatoes, and cabbage.

It’s also good to note that some varieties of vegetables are richer in vitamin C than fruits. And if you’re thinking of packing on large doses of vitamin C every day, then forget it: all excess vitamin C is flushed by our urinary tract, because aggressive amounts of it cause headaches, vomiting, and kidney stones.

Vitamin D – dubbed by most nutritionists as the “controller” of many diseases in the body. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin found in very few foods. Normalized amounts of vitamin D help in:

1. Strengthening our teeth. It doesn’t directly strengthen our teeth, but helps in the regulation and absorption of calcium. Vitamin D regulates and optimizes our calcium intake. It basically acts as the gears for calcium’s circulation in our body.

2. Helps avoid gingivitis, because of its anti-inflammatory properties.

Natural sources of vitamin D include:

Fatty fish, such as tuna, sardines, and salmon.

Eggs, specifically egg yolk.

Animal liver

Mushrooms

You know that you’re sufficiently ingesting vitamin D when you have:

Healthy hair

Light, soft skin

Pimple-free face and body

And of course, strong, white teeth

Take note that even while you get sunlight in your room doesn’t mean get vitamin D. That’s because natural sunlight does not penetrate through translucent layers. It’s also better to engage in exercise while basking in sunlight.

While the idea a patient being HPV-positive and having oral cancer at the same time may induce one to think that life is on the two times on the brink, guess again – patients are more likely to survive the dreaded condition if their oropharyngeal cancer is HPV-positive.

Dr. Angela Hong of the University of Sydney has recently conducted studies involving 198 patients from various regions in Australia. Her study revolved around the survival rate of patients dying from HPC+OPC those who suffer from HPV-OPC, after the patients have been subjected to intensive radioactive therapy and/or, needless to say, surgery.

The study later on prognosticated that HPV+OPC patients three to four times less likely to die than HPV-OPC patients.

Hong saying “Our study, which focused on a group of patients with advanced oropharyngeal cancer, found that those with cancer caused by HPV had a significantly better chance of survival than cancer which was not caused by HPV. And this beneficial HPV effect was seen regardless of the type of treatment they had,” can monger either fear or relief for those who have been battling against the disease.

HPV 16 and HPV 18 – two variants of the virus – are known causative factors linked to oral cancer. The virus can be easily acquired from having oral-genital sex from an HPV-positive partner. HPV-positive oropharyngeal cancer is also linked to tobacco smokers and alcoholics. To this date, scientists and doctors are still working to single out the real cause of the cancer, but even until now, only HPV+OPC patients can bear the sigh of relief.

Apparently, people with active sexual lifestyles have a significantly lesser chance of inhibiting the cancer if they bid to a single partner. Sex with multiple partners, oral-genital sex, anal-oral sex, recreational drug use, and periodontitis, each further multiply the chances of acquiring the disease based on statistics. There have also been HPV vaccines that might help the body ward off the virus, but it’s still lifestyle that will likely save anyone from this condition.

And even now, survivors aren’t out of the woods. Non-smoking survivors are less prone to reacquire the disease than those who have chewed or smoked tobacco in the past. The cancer’s recurrence is astonishingly probable on people who are reluctant to shrug off their past lifestyles.

The cancer affects more men than women, as evidenced by 3.2 non-HPV cases on 100,000 males, compared to 1.9 non-HPV cases on 100,000 respondents, comprised of both men and women. The World Health Organization has stated in 2007 that the human papillomavirus is indeed the agent responsible for the cancer. To again emphasize, the human papillomavirus can easily be acquired through sexual intercourse, and is evidenced by the sudden spawning of skin warts, genital warts, and respiratory papillomatosis. The virus has also been linked to cervical cancer, anal cancer, vulvar cancer, and penile cancer.

Tooth decay is something not to be taken lightly. It affects nearly 80% of the world population. Dental caries leads to worse dental conditions that will eventually leave you cringing in pain. But luckily, dental caries can be prevented easily, through proper oral hygiene, and of course, a sound dietary lifestyle.

Cranberries, grapes, oranges, and even fruit-derived beverages are rich in polyphenols – a group of organic compounds known for their antioxidant attributes. Polyphenols significantly reduce the risk of acquiring tooth decay, as also reducing the risks of other life-threatening diseases, such as the many forms of cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Polyphenols are basically the backbone of any antioxidant in fruits and vegetables, and other medicinal plants. It’s important to intake food and beverages rich in polyphenols on a daily basis.

Not only that, fruits and vegetables rich in fiber, vitamins and minerals help the mouth fend off gum diseases. Fruits and vegetables are actually equal substitutes for meat, as they contain non-heme iron, half of the amount of heme iron we get from animal sources. However, not all foods contain iron, and some foods and drinks are not intended to eaten together with iron-rich sources. Inhibitors of iron – or blockers of iron absorption – include milk, egg white, apples, any tea variant, and protein-rich foods. Your mother was right in telling you not to drink milk and fruit juice simultaneously.

But don’t leave out fish and meat. Meatatarians who love eating fish meat and red meat are getting their daily dose of heme irons. Meat is also rich in minerals and zinc (that helps in digestion),

If you’re an exclusive consumer of meat, vegetables – or both, you’ll always find that natural foods, unlike processed foods, are richer and healthier, and if you’ve been on the public market on some time, cheaper than any canned good.

A long-forgotten contributor of healthy teeth is cheese. Cheese, though its variants may sometimes be bland in taste, is the better complement of toothpaste, as it neutralizes the acids left by the meal you’ve previously ingested, reducing the chances of abrased (or yellowed) teeth caused by untimely brushing of teeth.

And finally, invest on whole-grain foods: they give you generous amounts energy. And, get this: previously examined skulls of people whose dependency on whole-grain products have been found to have none to moderate wear on their teeth. Eating cereal, bread, pasta, and flour pastries do not promise to give you much needed minerals, but they do one good job in preventing your teeth from being damaged in the slightest way.

But the most important habit to mind is to always brush and floss your teeth 15 minutes after every meal. Always bring toothpicks when you eat outside to clog out the debris stuck in between teeth.

Getting dentures is hardly anyone’s favorite decision. For some, getting dentures is admitting defeat to peer pressure. But the real reason why one should get dentures is neither because of their cosmetic backdrop, nor the confidence they exude – you need dentures to help you chew food properly.

A lot of people aren’t born with the perfect smile. Brittle teeth, impacted teeth, and missing teeth – these are just some of the reasons why people want to get dentures. Getting dentures is a lifelong decision, and a convoluted one as well, since you’re bound to take care of false teeth due to the cost of having them replaced.

A few young people have often thought of getting dentures as replacement for their crooked teeth. Apparently, this doesn’t solve all long-term problems with the teeth. If the tooth is not causing you any pain at all, and you just wish to have false teeth in place of it, consider getting veneers or wearing braces instead. Dentures are the last resort for any cosmetic malady. In fact, they cause even more problems if you have your good teeth pulled out just for the sake of getting full dentures. You’ll have to hold the upper and lower dentures from falling out using your tongue. False teeth will also impediment your usual routine of smiling and laughing, as there is a tendency for the false teeth to fall out with minor ecstatic movements.

Dentures will also deform the bone and tissue in your mouth. The brain – which is now aware that all the teeth have been extracted – will cause the alveolar bone and tissue that once supported the teeth, to reabsorb or to die off, thus leaving you with a deformity not only in your jaw, but also in some parts of your skull, as collateral damage. Your chin will then start protrude, followed by the retraction of the alveolar bone, thereby giving you a “squished face”, even if have your dentures on.

Dentures DO NOT last a lifetime. In fact, the only useful duration of any set of false teeth is only 7 years. After that, you’ll have to go visit your dentist again and get X-rays for any change in the anatomy of your bite, not to mention the “extra spacing” gums have formed while wearing dentures. You will also have to visit the dentist every 2 years to fill spaces caused by the recession of the alveolar bone, or else your facial structure will continue to deform, making your face appear smaller, and your teeth bigger.

If you fear any of this happening to you, there are also a cost-efficient alternative called dental implants.

They work just as good as any natural set of teeth, but without the fear of facial or oral deformity caused by dentures. Dentists agree that while dental implants can set you back a few thousand dollars, they will be the ultimate solution for people who want unrestrained comfort for the rest of their lives.

Unless you’re absolutely serious about getting dentures, whether partial or complete, you should consult a dentist who specializes on replacement teeth –a prosthodontist.

Yellow teeth are a common sight for old people, but then again, they are also major turn offs for teenagers and adults. Smiling with yellow teeth is a horrendous sight to behold. Apart from their distractive look, they can also be a sign of deteriorating health.

There are some substantial factors that contribute to the yellowing of teeth; these include:

1. Age

Age has a lot to do with the yellowing of teeth, because our teeth’s enamel wears down as we age. When the enamel wears out, the dentin (or the inner, yellowish part of the teeth) becomes visible. However, bear in mind that people who constantly brush their teeth until they grow to a ripe age barely get any hints of yellowish teeth, as their enamel is preserved and strengthened thanks to constant brushing and flossing.

2. Food and Drinks

Even after intensive gargling, food debris is still fastened to the teeth. And it can lead to bigger problems if the food you’ve been eating is rich is sucrose and acid. Sweet foods like chocolate, ice cream, and candy are rich in sugar; acidic food such as meat, citric fruits, and beans are the second half of teeth-yellowing food. The same goes for coffee, carbonated drinks, shakes, and other colored beverages. Leaving your teeth unbrushed or unflossed overnight hastens the plaque build-up process, which can lead to cavities and tartar.

It is imperative that you brush your teeth thoroughly for 3 minutes, 15 minutes after every each meal. Brushing your teeth immediately, especially after eating/drinking acidic food/beverages, will abrase the enamel of your teeth.

3. Vices

Smoking tobacco and guzzling down alcohol at the same time is ten times as hazardous to your health as it is to your teeth. Notice that smokers, only after a few years living off their lifestyle, start to exhibit darkening gums and yellowish teeth. Apart from the risks of lung cancer, tobacco smoking can also lead to oral cancer. Chewing tobacco has recently been linked to the dreaded disease, as a lot of baseball players (who, by the way, are frequent tobacco-chewers), are complaining about early and manifest symptoms of the cancer.

4. Root canals

If you recently had a root canal, where the pulp and nerves inside the tooth are removed, the tooth/teeth that underwent the procedure will eventually turn yellow in the course of a few months (or even just weeks). The root canal therapy basically kills the tooth, but holds it in place. During its subsequent death, the tooth will inevitably turn yellow and become brittle, thereby invoking the need to have a metal jacket placed on it.

5. Genetics

If you live in a family where yellow teeth are a common sight, chances are you’re going to have yellow teeth too. But that doesn’t mean that your teeth aren’t healthy. Genetically-acquired yellow teeth indicate that the enamel layer is thin and translucent, thereby failing to conceal the dentin (which is yellow, by the way). This can be resolved by going to your dentist and asking about at-home or professional tooth whitening treatments to fully whiten your teeth.
